Book it! How to make your own e-book

By Jakob Jelling

Most experts agree that an e-book is one of the most effective online marketing tools available. As a product category, it falls under the class of Information Products. While the prospect of writing an e-book may seem daunting, just about any competent blogger or webmaster is capable of both making and selling an e-book. The first step is the pinpointing of an idea for your e-book. You should thoroughly think out your original idea – you will be only wasting your time if at a later date you realize that the idea is not worth writing about. The first step in selecting a topic is to actually write from your own experience and knowledge. Another idea is to conduct some market research. Find out what kind of information people desire and then compile a comprehensive guide on that topic. You might also decide on writing about a niche which the more general books have not thoroughly handled.

Always ask yourself – will this e-book deliver a benefit to my customers? This is crucial - your e-book will be a failure if it doesn’t deliver any value to the online world. The next step involves research – start by collecting background and basic information for your topic. Make sure that all your facts are correct and that your research is recent. Do not neglect to consult offline resources like libraries, magazines and books. Following this the next step is to properly organize all the information you have collected. While this is being done, formulate an outline for your e-book. It would be better if you organize your material along these lines. A very crucial consideration – do not ever try to plagiarize. Always ask for permission from the relevant sources before you include them in your e-book.

Once you have planned a rough, basic outline for your e-book just start with writing the first draft. The actual task of writing seems very daunting to many people. However, it need not be so. Once you start writing, the process becomes easier. After you have finished with the draft, go over it again. This is the time when you correct all your punctuation and grammar mistakes. Also, make sure that you are editing the draft as you go along. You can always add image files to better illustrate and strengthen your argument. You now need to invest in a good e-book compiler. A compiler transforms your content into a format (usually HTML) which can be easily distributed over the internet. Te final effort involves the marketing of the e-book. Create a website or mention it on your blog – give your utmost to a viral marketing campaign.
