How to avoid phishing scams

There is an old saying that has that every coin has two sides. Well, it’s true, every coin does have two sides and so does business on the Internet. While the scope and focus of millions of people worldwide is to make the Internet a safe and productive ground for transaction of business and finance there are also those that will use the avenues of the Internet to suit their own ends by conning the general public through scams and fooling the public. The number and the sheer credibility of some of these scams is growing with increased fervor everyday so net users should be very careful whom they entrust their financial information to.

Although e-commerce and internet banking is very safe and is protected but users should also be wary when a new party asks for personal financial information; this should never be given over the internet. To avoid phishing scams for good, do not trust any email that asks for your personal financial information as a matter of urgency. Ignore such messages and keep your money safe.

Phishing mails can easily be identified as emails that insist upon obtaining your personal information urgently. Phishing mails will include messages that tend to excite or severely disturb, such a reaction is essential for phishing mails because they rely upon such a response. These emails will generally ask for your social service number, credit card numbers, usernames, passwords and other such proofs of identity. One should be careful; if the email has not been digitally signed then it can easily be tampered with.

Phishing emails will not use personalized messages rather they will address you in a very general way but if your bank had to contact you it would do so using a very personalized email. If you are given links to a particular website in a unknown email then do not access that website through the link provided, instead copy the address into the address bar and go to the site or call up your bank and ask for information regarding any new schemes that the phish email may have mentioned. Always clarify and crosscheck with your bank before sending out information to some unknown and unseen entity. If you must give details to a third party, a party that you believe is genuine, do not offer any information over the Internet, and choose to call over the telephone instead.

To avoid becoming a scapegoat of phishing agents, always remain up to date with your online accounts, check them regularly. You should frequently check all your financial transactions to make sure all dealings are legitimate. Make sure that your browser is updated regularly and secure and lastly if you receive any phishing emails then you should report them, the more phishers we catch the more we can keep your financial transactions safe on the Internet.
