Why you should never spam

By Jakob Jelling

SPAM is a form of (deliberate) advertising in which you send your advertises (illegally) to people even when they have not asked for it. The former name of SPAM was UCE (unsolicited commercial email). Hence, if you are thinking of using SPAM to make business, here are some reasons why you shouldn’t proceed for it.

Firstly, SPAM is illegal (unsolicited) and hence you are always on the verge of going through penal actions (if SPAM is not entertained in that particular area or on that server). Also, it is not ethical, since you are providing ‘unnecessary’ thing to someone. If you are taking services from some spam provider - think twice. You are promised that your advertisement will be sent ‘only’ to the interested audience. But in reality, the spam providers create mailing lists by ‘stealing’ addresses from public domains or newsgroups. Thus, if you buy services from such sources, chances are high that you will get in trouble with your Internet service provider (ISP). To get out of this trouble, most spam providers have come up with the idea of changing their Internet service providers frequently, thus doing another mistake. For this purpose, they have to suffer many legitimate actions.

Think of spam, not only as a simple ‘bulk mail’ problem, but as a global internet issue. SPAM eats up a lot of bandwidth thus creating a lot of congestion in the network. In this way, millions & millions of spam messages travel from their sources to their destinations, thus wasting a lot of money, time & internet resources; and finally, no proper output is derived by the senders. The viewer anyway throws it into the trash bin, or some email providers like Yahoo directly sort out SPAM mail to the bulk folder itself. Also, since you have chosen the worst way of advertising, the image of your product and your company becomes bad in front of the viewer, hence you gain enemies rather than customers.

There have been a lot of issues, which ultimately led the spammers to total loss. A noticeable case took place with a webmaster who had bought services from a spam provider. He started receiving loads of calls on his toll free number – not business calls, but complaint calls from angry audiences. Finally, he had to remove the number, after paying a huge telephone bill along with the fees of the spam provider. Another case took place where a webmaster gained nothing but an average meager income by using spam & finally he had to pay a huge bill to his internet service provider & finally had to change the ISP.

The most important factor, though, is mentioned above. SPAM is not ethical. The users are paying money to check their mails (in the form of ISP chares, dial-up charges, and other fees) only to find all rubbish stuffed in their account. Thus, you are not only wasting your own resources but are also creating irritations to the reader by using this cheap and illegitimate way of marketing.
