Get the web talking about your website using RSS

By Jakob Jelling

Have you ever wondered how long it would take for your blog or website to achieve World Wide Web fame? Have you thought about what it would be like if your website and its information were discussed in pages that didn’t belong to you? Have you ever thought whether all of this was possible? Well, whether you did or not is not the question, what matters is that someone cared enough to make it happen. UserLand developed RSS, or in other words Really Simple Syndication in 1997. It is basically a lightweight XML format that makes it possible for web users to share information, like news headlines and other web content. UserLand abandoned the project but it was picked up by Netscape that went on to create around five versions of the same. RSS is used to track and list hyperlinks to sites along with descriptions of the same. The links are provided with a small description of the events going on at your website so that the user is in touch with your website while not even being there.

RSS works in a multitude of ways to gain more traffic and popularity for your site, not to mention visibility and space for the goings-on at your site. This works in a newsroom fashion. When you have enabled your site to RSS format, every time you change something on your site, it appears like a news item on someone else’s site, a site you are linked to. The beauty of RSS is that it distributes your information and your news all over the net bringing you free traffic and free publicity, by syndicating your content on the Internet.

There was a time when business was preferably conducted face to face but that time has now past and what people are looking for is faster updates and new information. It is difficult to be constantly updating your site or blog, it can take up your time 24/7. However, since you do not have that kind of time then the only course of action open to you if you do not want to lose business, get an RSS feed. The RSS feed will constantly and regularly update your site’s information available on the Internet; you don’t even have to do it yourself. Thereafter all the users interested in your site have only to read your site’s RSS feed found for them by their computer’s RSS newsreader and you’re on!
Displaying the recent updates of your site on other web pages helps in keeping your presence felt even though you yourself may not be around. Even search engines are increasingly pushing sites with RSS updates higher on the search engine rankings because these sites obviously have the latest content.

Using RSS on your website is a great way to increase traffic for your site. It takes your popularity curve for a SIX! So what are you waiting for? Go get a RSS feed and get the Web talking about your site!
