Reach the top step by step

An insight into how to get to the top of the search engines.

Do search engines ranking matter?

The worth and usefulness of a web page is often gleaned from the fact of its ranking on search engine lists. The ranking that a web site has on a search engine list is no laughing matter, because most net surfers hardly have the patience to venture past the sites listed on the first page. Even though the search engine may claim that a certain keyword has say, 1,777,000 sites to its name, the chance of a net surfer actually taking the time out to peruse each one of these sites is very, very slim.

Therefore, it is of utmost importance to the survival of the site that it is located on a decently early spot on the search engine rankings. The ranking that a site has on the listing of a search engine spells revenue for it because the higher the ranking, the more people will venture towards the site and log on to it.

What affects the ranking of a site upon a search engine?

According to studies conducted, the ranking that a certain site gets upon the search engine database is ascertained using certain guidelines. Some of the more important factors that are taken into account are the number of links to your site from other web sites and web pages, the content of a site is taken into consideration, the number of keywords occurring during the text on the site, whether or not the images on the site are marked with an ALT tag, Google indexes sites according to the ALT tag, the HTML tag on the site, the speed of the server that powers your web site.

The numbers of links that are connected to your site are very important. The numbers of sites that are linked to your web site reflect the popularity of your site, following a very basic public relations principle; your important is directly related to the number of people you are connected to, the same holds true for your web site. Among the other sites and web pages that are linked to you through links, it often helps if they themselves are ‘important’ sites, meaning if they themselves are high ranking web sites then your chances of moving up the ranking become stronger.

If the content on your site is HTML based, without text in graphics then it becomes easier for the search engine to index the web pages with minimum hassle. This helps in moving the site up the ranking, however if you have text in graphics and multimedia files, Java applets and Acrobat files on your site, most search engines do not index them which is not so favorable for the site ranking. The occurrence of the keywords is also another factor; it is enough for most search engines to have the keyword in the title or the first paragraph. It is also a goof idea to have a catchy headline to the site; this helps in distinguishing the site.

The speed of the server affects the ranking of the site drastically. If your server is slow while loading and opening pages then the search engine will relegate your site to a lower ranking. It is important that information is viewed quickly because that is a basic premise of viewing information on the Internet. People turn to the search engine for concise information delivered in a fast way, and if this basic requirement is not met then this means trouble for the future of your site’s ranking.

Therefore, in order to improve and maintain your site’s ranking among the highest on the search engine, it is important to keep these few guidelines in mind.
