Selling products online

By Jakob Jelling

Thanks to the advancements in the field of computers and the internet, a new category of business has been established – Online business. Though it seems strange, but many people actually like to do the shopping online. Given below is the basic idea of the procedure of online business as well as some important guidelines.

First, it is necessary to set up your own website. You also have the option of putting up your product on some other website (like a public domain), but it is always beneficial to have your own website, so that you have full control over your business. Also, make sure you have your own domain instead of using a free web page service so that your company can acquire a good status. Make sure your website name is related to the name of your product or service so it is easy for the customer to remember it. You can buy a domain from a web hosting company along with your web space and your personal Email ID (you@yoursite.com).

Once you have bought a domain, it is time to design it. A simple & sober look can definitely help maintain the standard of your product. If you are taking services of web designers, make sure you provide them with ‘all’ your ideas, requirements and expectations. Set up separate pages for product reviews, discussion blogs, links, etc. it is advisable to have a shopping cart. Web portals like Powweb let you set up your shopping cart for free.

After you have finished with the website, register with a well working search engine. You can either register to a single search engine or register to a portal, which will subscribe you to a bunch of engines. It is recommended to take a brief survey of the search engines before subscribing to them. Compare the different engines according to the types searches made on them, number of people using them, exposure of that engine on an international level, etc. also, advertise your product (or your website) on other famous domains (for e.g. a relevant public domain).

The most important factor to be looked at is the payment. It is a tedious job to get a business license & then set up your own finance section. Instead, you can use well known payment services like Paypal, which are free to subscribe. They look after the collection of payment, send the collection to your account directly & charge a small percent of it. You should always keep the option of payment by credit cards. No customer will like to send money orders or cheques to you by mail.

Always keep in mind that a customer will never buy from your website unless and until he gets the feeling of satisfaction and security. Provide the customer ample ways to reach you – Email, telephone, snail mail, etc. Let him feel secure about your payment transactions. Create your own product guarantee policy. If possible, give him the money back guarantee. Provide the best customer service by actually calling the customer by telephone.
Also, keep in mind to do offline advertising along with online advertising.
